House on Minnie Luisa

Posted by Paul Oliver Anthes on April 1st, 2008

Paul J. Anthes and Ollie were married.  They were my Grandfather and grandmother.  I met them both as a child before they passed away.  My own Father lived in that house from 1925 until he left home.  I grew up hearing him talk about the neighborhood and that house.  He attended North High and graduated in 1929.  He played football for them and I have many clippings referring to him as “Moose Anthes”  He was actually only 6 foot 1 inch and about 200 pounds…big for his day.

Community Garage Sale

Posted by mpmlna on March 30th, 2008

The Second Annual MPML Neighborhood Garage Sale will be held on Saturday, June 7th, from 8 A.M. to 4 P.M. Anyone living in the area bounded by Ames, Craig, Florence Blvd and 35th Street is eligible to participate. The cost to get on the map is $5.00, which will be used by the Neighborhood Association to advertise the garage sale in the World Herald, Thrifty Nickel, and pass out flyers at the Florence Days Parade. Participants will host their garage sales at their homes and keep all the profits. The Neighborhood Association will draw up a map of all the participating homes. Participants can distribute the maps to friends and the Neighborhood Association will make the maps available to garage sale shoppers from other parts of town. Anyone interested in participating can sign up at No Frills on April 4 & 5 and at Bakers on April 11 & 12 from 3-7 P.M. Last year’s participants will receive a letter with an application. We are hoping to have 100 participants this year.

Neighborhood Cleanup

Posted by mpmlna on March 30th, 2008

This year’s Neighborhood Cleanup will be held on April 26th from 9 AM until 2 PM. This neighborhood service is a great opportunity to get rid of trash that the city collection service doesn’t normally handle. Plan to do your part to keep our neighborhood clean by taking your undesirables to the following locations:

Regular household trash and scrap metal will be accepted at McMillian Middle School at 3802 Redick Ave.

Tires will be accepted at St. Richards Church at 4318 Fort St.

Appliances will be accepted at Conestoga Magnet School 2115 Burdette St.

The cleanup crews will not accept paint, oil, car batteries, or yard waste. City truck drivers will screen waste as it is dropped off and may refuse to accept other items.

Last year’s cleanup was a huge success where many neighborhood residents used the service to safely and easily dispose of bulky waste and scrap metal. Thanks to our 22 volunteers, eight garbage trucks were completely filled, hauling away somewhere between 70 and 80 tons of trash that without this service might still be in our basements and backyards. An additional 5.2 tons of scrap metal was collected for recycling.

Website Under New Management

Posted by mpmlna on February 11th, 2008

Hello,

I’ve just signed on to manage the neighborhood association’s website. In the next couple of weeks I plan on updating with minutes from the February 7th association meeting, a schedule of this year’s community events, and news about some of the exciting developments in our community. I’m also starting a new section which will showcase some of this neighborhood’s amazing home renovations. So many of us place an enormous amount of pride in our homes, and it shows! This section will be your chance to show others how great the homes in this neighborhood are. But I’ll need photos if this is going to work. I can be reached at e_hassler@lycos.com for any website contributions or comments. Visit this site again in the near future. Updates are coming soon!

Best Regards,

Elijah Hassler

NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANUP

Posted by mpmlna on April 24th, 2007

The annual Neighborhood Cleanup was held on April 21, 2007 at McMillian Magnet School from 8:30-2:00.  MPML had 18 volunteers and Belevedere Point had 4.  The day was very sunny and extremely windy.  We filled 8 garbage trucks ( each truck hold between 9-10 tons of crushed garbage).  We filled 2 1/2 containers of scrap metal about 5.2 tons.  The people who came to use the service were very grateful for the opportunity to get rid of stuff.  When the day was finished everyone was exhusted and very, very sun and wind burned.  The end of another perfect day.  See the photo album for some of the action pictures.

Minutes of the April 5, 2007 Association Meeting

Posted by mpmlna on April 11th, 2007

The meeting was opened with the treasurers report.  We received $6.00 in dues for March, collected $160.06 in cans and received $1400.52 as our part of the Citizens Patrol Raffle.( we made an agreement with the Patrol that we would subsidize the purchase of the raffle prizes and would participate in the sale of the raffle for 1/2 of the profits) Current balance is $4301.68.  We have collected $1376.37 from our can drive to date.

Secretary’s Report was read and approved.

Larry Reynard gave an up date on the Neighborhood Cleanup scheduled for April 21 from 9:00 A.M. - 2:00 P.M.   We will not take tires, or large appliances.  We have contracted with a metals recycling firm and they have agreed to provide the dumpster for any metel we get and they will give us 1/2 of the profits.  We have purchased gloves for the workers.

Arlene Moorhouse gave a report on the Garage Sale for June 2.  We have signed up 19 people to date.  We will be at No Frills and Baker on April 14 and 22 from 12:00-4:00 to sign up anyone else who wanted to participate.  TELL YOUR NEIGHBORS ABOUT THE SALE.  Remember we are having the sale to bring people from other parts of Omaha into our area so they can see what a nice neighborhood we have.

The President asked if the wanted to have an election of officers this year.  It was decided that the present offices will be retained for 1 more year.

In March we decided to apply for the Mayors Community Grant.  We had 2 suggestions about the grant applications: 1.  Flower baskets along Minne Lusa Blvd.

                                          2.  Benchs and picnic tables for the new playground area that will be installed in the fall.

Carol Kimnach and Sharon Olson said they would do the research and write the grants for both projects and then we would decide which project had the most merit.  The research for the flower baskets found that the few people we spoke to about the project were not sure they would be willing to pay to have the basket planted and taken care each year.  Some of the residents said they wanted the islands cleaned up before any other beautification projects should be undertaken.  It was decided that the grant writing team would concentrate on the other project.  A grant was written and the members voted that we should submit it.  The grant was submitted for $5000.00. This would enable us to purchase 2 benches as $885.00 ea. and 1 covered picnic table for $3700.00 for a total of $5470.00.  We would then use our can monies or the money from the scrape metal from the Neighborhood Cleanup to pay the additional cost.  The grant was submitted on April 6 at 10:00 A.M.

The officers are going to Lincoln on Monday April 9, to be part of a group accepting an award from the Governor for the work  the Association and the Citizens Patrol did on the Address It Now campaign.  We will be one of 6 other neighborhood associations that participated in the project.  Ron Abdouch, from the Neighborhood Center For Greater Omaha  was at our meeting and told the membership that everyone is invited to UNO, Alumni Center on April 11 for the presentation of our awards from Mayor Fahey for this project  the time is 5:30 to 7:00 P.M.  Everyone is welcome.

Beth Richards, who has been the person who let us store the cans in her garage until we took them in for recycling, said she was ready to start working on the garage and we would have to find another place to store them.  She agreed to leave them for 1 more month while we found a place or decided on a new procedure.  We want to thank Beth very much for her dedication to this project.  She was the driving force in getting us to do it and we do appreciation her efforts.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:05 P.M.
